In the earlier part of the 20th century, the idea of using the egg carton was first introduced. A major challenge to eggs in the past was in transporting them, as breaking news meant that many of the eggs would be broken. Newspaper editor from Canada named Joseph Coyle is widely attributed as the first person to invent egg cartons in 1911 with specific goal of settling the tug of war between a farmer and a hotel owner with a disagreement over broken eggs. His design of packaging only one egg per compartment helped to reduce the probability of eggs being broken significantly.
